Massachusetts Car Inspection Grace Period Explained

Massachusetts does not offer a formal grace period for vehicle inspections. Your car must be inspected by the last day of the month on your current inspection sticker. If you miss that deadline—even by one day—you risk being ticketed for an expired inspection sticker.

That said, the RMV inspection system allows inspections on the first day of the following month, but your new sticker will still reflect the previous month. For example, if your sticker expires in June and you get inspected on July 1, your new sticker will still show a June expiration date.

To stay compliant and avoid fines, it's best to inspect your vehicle before the end of the month. Use our inspection station locator to find a local garage with available appointments or walk-in hours.
